Unwind in the ship's two-story panorama lounge with a refreshing beverage, mingling with fellow travelers as the vessel sets sail from Bergen, navigating through Hjeltefjord, marking the commencement of your scenic odyssey along Norway's coast.
Day 3 - Molde – the City of Roses :
Molde, nestled as the capital and economic hub of Romsdalen, graces the southern shores of the Romsdal Peninsula. While your Coastal Express has frequented this port in the past, this time, we're extending your stay considerably, allowing ample opportunity for exploration.
Enhancing your Molde experience, the Coastal Experience Team arranges optional activities. Among them, an excursion to the Atlantic Road, a prominent feature of Norway's coastline often portrayed in Hollywood films, awaits nearby.
Weather permitting, and should time permit, consider joining an optional trek to the Varden viewpoint. Revel in unparalleled panoramic vistas from an altitude of 402 meters above sea level, beholding Molde and its backdrop of 222 snow-capped peaks across Moldefjord.

The Vikna archipelago comprises approximately 6,000 islands, islets, and skerries, with Inner-Vikna standing as the largest among them. Your next destination brings us to this captivating chain, aiming to arrive at the port town of Rørvik by mid-morning, where we'll linger for the better part of the day.
Rørvik and its environs boast a rich history, evidenced by ancient burial mounds that trace back to antiquity. The maritime heritage of the area finds vibrant expression in Rørvik's numerous museums, notably The Norwegian Coastal Museum. Another notable export is cod, celebrated annually with the town's Cod Festival in March. This cold-water species thrives in the archipelago's winter waters, offering a tempting opportunity to savor freshly prepared cod cakes during your visit.
Day 5 - Lødingen :
Lødingen, serving as the administrative hub of a municipality sharing its name, stands as a village nestled on the southwestern coastline of Hinnøya, boasting a population of under 2,000. This port holds sentimental significance for Hurtigruten, as it was a regular stop on one of the earlier coastal routes, making this return feel like a homecoming.
Upon your midday docking, Lødingen becomes a launchpad for exploring more of Hinnøya island, Norway's largest island south of Svalbard. Wander the streets adjacent to the port and marvel at the traditional red fishing huts, known as rorbuer, dotting the shoreline. As you stroll, you'll likely absorb the tranquil ambiance synonymous with village life.
The highlight of this visit undoubtedly lies in the awe-inspiring fjords and mountains that adorn the Norwegian coast. Branching off from Andfjord, Gullesfjord carves into the northern side of Hinnøya, flanked by pristine mountainous terrain. This area garners popularity among campers who seek refuge in campsites or cabins, angling for cod in the fjord during winter.
From Lødingen, a selection of optional excursions awaits, including a fishing expedition led by a local expert, an immersive Sámi encounter offering insights into their culture and history, or a visit to Dampskipsbrygga, Lødingen's erstwhile wharf.

Embark on a guided tour of the town to delve deeper into this mesmerizing natural phenomenon. The Northern Lights Cathedral hosts an exhibition showcasing Alta's pivotal role as a hub for groundbreaking research on the Aurora Borealis between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The winter season brings increased snowfall, paving the way for authentic Arctic adventures. Alta's snowy landscapes and climate provide the ideal setting for the construction and maintenance of the Igloo Hotel, situated along the banks of the Alta River.
Explore the world's northernmost ice hotel during your visit, meticulously crafted from snow and ice each winter, adorned with unique artistic themes by local sculptors. Day 7 - Honningsvåg – gateway to the North Cape :

Standing at the northern precipice of Norway, gazing out over the Barents Sea beneath the polar night sky, offers a truly remarkable experience. Envision the celestial ballet of the Northern Lights illuminating the heavens above, creating an unforgettable spectacle.

Day 9 - Stokmarknes – the birthplace of Hurtigruten, Svolvær – at the heart of Lofoten :
Today beckons us to explore the captivating beauty of Lofoten, a mesmerizing cluster of islands emerging from the Norwegian Sea. The moment you behold the majestic peaks enveloping you, with picturesque fishing villages nestled upon their slopes, you'll comprehend why this island chain garners acclaim as one of Norway's most breathtaking destinations.
Our itinerary wouldn't be complete without a stop in Stokmarknes, a historic town situated in Vesterålen, an archipelago northeast of Lofoten. Among all our destinations, this one holds a special significance. It was here, in 1893, that the Original Coastal Express was established by shipping pioneer Richard With.
The Coastal Express swiftly evolved into a vital link for Norway's remote coastal communities, and it's fitting that our legacy is commemorated at its birthplace. Standing proudly on the waterfront is our 1956 vessel, MS Finnmarken, housed within a glass structure resembling a ship in a bottle.
Welcome to Hurtigrutemuseet, the museum chronicling our journey as Norway's premier coastal exploration cruise line, from inception to present day. Embark on a guided tour to delve into the history of seafaring, exploring the retired vessel and reliving the ambiance of a bygone era.
Later in the afternoon, we'll dock in Svolvær, nestled on the island of Austvågøya in the southern expanse of Lofoten. As the largest town in the archipelago, Svolvær bustles with activity, boasting an array of shops, restaurants, galleries, and cafes to delight in. Don't miss the chance to admire the panoramic views of the Svolvær Goat, a nearby mountain aptly named for its resemblance to a goat and its horns.
An array of optional excursions awaits from Svolvær, including winter fishing expeditions, coastal kayaking adventures, or immersive bus tours offering insights into Lofoten's rich history.
Day 10 - Brønnøysund – coastal charm right in the middle of Norway :
Nestled amidst islands and water, Brønnøysund occupies a slender peninsula extending from the mainland. This quaint town is home to around 5,000 residents, many residing in vibrant houses set against a backdrop of rolling hills and dramatic mountain peaks.
Stroll through the lively harbor area and meander along Havnegata, soaking in the maritime charm. Pause for a bite to eat at one of the cozy pubs or indulge in a meal at a local restaurant. Explore the visitor's marina or venture to the 1870 Neo-Gothic stone church for a glimpse into local history and culture.
As we navigate the waters, keep an eye out for the Vega archipelago, comprising approximately 6,500 islands, skerries, and islets. On the island of Gardsøy, a UNESCO World Heritage Center showcases the traditional harvesting of highly prized eiderdown from local eider ducks, providing nesting huts for their use.
South of Brønnøysund lies Torghatten mountain, distinguished by a natural tunnel piercing its center. According to local legend, the tunnel was formed when a troll, thwarted in his pursuit of a young woman, fired an arrow at her. As the Troll King intervened to shield her with his hat, the rising sun transformed it into stone, leaving a hole from the arrow's impact.
On an optional excursion, embark on a one-hour hike to the mountain's tunnel. Peer through the passage and savor panoramic views of the surrounding islands, immersing yourself in the enchanting landscape.
Day 11 - Ålesund :
Following a satisfying breakfast aboard the ship, we'll arrive at Ålesund by mid-morning, a picturesque town sprawled across a series of islands.
As we approach the shoreline, you'll immediately notice the distinct architectural style. Inspired by Art Nouveau, prevalent in the early 1900s, every aspect of the buildings, from their vibrant hues to their rounded spires, reflects this influence. Following a significant fire in 1904, the town underwent a comprehensive renovation, resulting in nearly its entire transformation into an Art Nouveau masterpiece.
Venturing away from the waterfront, you'll find yourself immersed in a fairy-tale setting, navigating narrow streets adorned with unique residences. Opt for a guided walking tour to explore Ålesund's iconic Art Nouveau architecture, followed by a sampling of the finest craft beers from local breweries. Alternatively, embark on a scenic bus excursion to Alnes, delving into the Saga Islands, a historic lighthouse, and a myriad of Viking tales.
If your camera's memory isn't already brimming with snapshots, head to the nearby Mount Aksla viewpoint for breathtaking panoramas of the archipelago. While the 418 steps leading to the summit may seem daunting, the unparalleled views awaiting you make the ascent well worthwhile.
Day 12 - The Hardangerfjord, Haugesund :
Embarking on a southward journey along Norway's western coastline, we navigate past some of the nation's most renowned fjords, none more majestic than the Hardangerfjord.
Stretching an impressive 179 kilometers, it stands as the second longest fjord in Norway and the fifth longest globally. This awe-inspiring waterway is a testament to Norway's natural splendor, offering vistas of towering mountain peaks mirrored in the glistening waters below.
The region is famed for its apple-based products, ranging from delectable jams and juices to its acclaimed cider, often dubbed as 'Nordic Champagne' by connoisseurs.
Weather permitting, we may have the opportunity to dock at Rosendal or one of the charming settlements dotting the fjord's shores. Rosendal, a quaint village, is renowned for its 16th-century Barony, renowned for its exquisite rose garden and meticulously landscaped grounds.
By afternoon, we'll arrive at Haugesund, hailed as the 'Home of the Viking Kings.' This epithet is evoked by notable landmarks such as St. Olav's Church, constructed in 1250 under the reign of King Håkon Hå. Additionally, Haraldshaugen, a national monument believed to be the burial site of the first king, adds to the city's historical allure.
Delve into the Viking Age with immersive exhibits at the Nordvegen Visiting Center, or join a local artist for a captivating exploration of glassblowing, architecture, and even Marilyn Monroe. For a truly adventurous and unconventional glimpse into Norway's Viking heritage, consider the Viking Experience by RIB, traversing the stunning and narrow Norway strait.
Day 13 - Kristiansand :
Situated at the southern tip of Norway, Kristiansand claims the title of the nation's fifth-largest city. With our planned port stay spanning from morning until late afternoon, you'll have ample opportunity to explore its charms.
As you wander through Kristiansand, you'll notice its layout follows a uniform grid plan, with straight roads extending from the harbor throughout the city. The architectural diversity lining these streets reflects the city's history of extensive rebuilding following major fires in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a notable attack during World War II.
Determined to achieve sustainability, Kristiansand aspires to become Europe's most environmentally friendly port. Delve deeper into this admirable endeavor on an optional excursion to Odderøya Island, where you'll enjoy stunning ocean and city vistas and explore 18th-century military barracks now transformed into innovative artist studios spearheading various sustainable initiatives.
Explore Kristiansand's military heritage on another optional excursion to Batterie Vara, originally a German fort during World War II, featuring the world's second-largest land-mounted cannon.
For a glimpse into maritime history, opt for a visit to the operational Lindesnes Lighthouse, marking Norway's southernmost point since the early 20th century. Discover the beacon's role in guiding seafarers to safety on dark nights and delve into its rich history dating back to 1656.
As we return to the ship, we'll conclude our cruise with a memorable farewell dinner. Seize this opportunity to share stories and reminisce with fellow travelers, exchanging photos and memories one last time.
Day 14 - Oslo :
As we journey from the southern reaches to the northernmost point and back down again, take a moment to reflect on your unforgettable voyage as we approach our final destination, Oslo, in the early morning light.
